Thank You CNN

My homepage for my laptop is the BBC homepage because it is the only real news site that I can find. Yesterday, I got online and read about the Finnish student that killed 9 people in a school shooting. I went to look for more information on CNN’s webpage and found nothing on their homepage. The main stories eventually were about the election and there was another about the best time to have sex.  I thought maybe they don’t have the story yet since it had happened earlier that day, but eventually I found it in the world section. There is no way that you would have seen it if you were not specifically looking for it as I was.

How could something so important be shadowed by everyday news like the presidential race? The obvious answer is that they are only interested in selling their news. From an economic standpoint, this is a great idea. But just maybe the people are not looking for what they would like to read.  I would really like to read about what I need to be reading, events around the world that are going to change my life and the life of my children.

The local news companies will continue to give marketable biased material that we cannot even count as a credible source. So what are we supposed to do?  No more reading the paper for me, or perhaps I can rely on other countries to give me what I need to know. This makes me feel like we are in some communist country where we are to believe that everything if fine and dandy, when really the world is in chaos. No thanks, I’ll stick will BBC.

Amen. Its pathetic.
The election is what people are getting right now because the newsmen know its marketable. There's no honesty, no truthfulness. If there was truth and honesty in reporting - and in journalism in general these days - then this would have been told, and told in such a way as for people to hear. And it would be that way for every atrocity, like Darfur.
I'm not holding my breath for the day when that will happen though.

I can understand why news always covers the presidential elections because the next president is very important to our country. Sometimes they overdue the coverage of presidential debates when they repeat what happened weeks ago, but I think they do need to keep citizens informed about new information pertaining to the election. But I completely agree with you about the amount of news that makes the headlines that is not important to our everyday lives. The fact the CNN is publishing headline articles about sex is ridiculous and something seriously does need to change.

I can certainly sympathize with both gawane89 and proud pony on this topic. The presidential debate is, without one of the largest issues in the United States today and it has received much coverage that has, perhaps, overshadowed other events going on throughout the world. It is important to remember that CNN’s attention on their home page is typically directed toward news and events that include United States involvement. The people from the United States go to CNN to get the news relevant to them as quickly as they can, thus, CNN is going to cater to their wants. It is a perfect marketing strategy: Give the people what they want.

On the other hand, it is true that journalism headlines on this site are relevant for the United States. They do not always represent equal division of Journalism bias. International topics will generally take longer to find. Since that is the case, if you plan to get other information about international events quickly and more reliably, then the BBC is the way to go.
