Mental Health Day

Every year, Webster updates their dictionary to have the newest common slang terms. After reading some of them in an article for The Times Daily, http://www.timesdaily.com/article/20080908/articles/809080321 I found it funny that one of the words was “mental health day” a phrase that I am accustomed to hearing. I wondered what could have caused this to be a common phrase in our society.

I took this further in my mind and I’m not lying to you, I really have spent some time trying to figure this out. What I think is that people no longer have anything to live for. In a world full of cubicles, suburbs, and housewives, the perfect life is not fulfilling the requirements for sanity. For this reason, movies like Fight Club are so popular. Despite speculation that this movie is popular due to Brad Pitt’s frequent shirt negligence, I believe it to be because this movie gives hope to the millions of Americans who are struggling with themselves to find what it is exactly that makes them happy, and not what they are told should make them happy.

Is it natural for humans to live the way that they do, and just sit around and work at a computer? Maybe because of our higher brain function, we really are meant to be that civilized. But if you ask me, I will tell you that there is more to life. All that we need to do is to figure out for ourselves what that is.

I feel this is a good point especially for college students. We are all trying to figure out what our lives are about and it is not too comforting to realize that many people are unhappy. I am having trouble adjusting to college and I constantly wonder when it will get better. I feel that happiness comes from attitude and to be happy people need an attitude change. So, to be happier I and many people in this world need to change their attitude and maybe their lives will become worth while.

First off, I'd like to start by saying that everyone watches Fight Club because of Brad Pitt. No one can deny that the guy looks great in that movie. Girls want him and guys want to be him after watching that movie. However, some insecure men desperately search for other reasons why they like the movie because they do not want to appear homosexual. They use excuses like "Bro, I watch Fight Club because I like the plot" or "the subliminal messages transposed in the movie are the reason the movie is so great" In the end, everyone watches Fight Club for one reason: Brad Pitt.

I feel that you are completely correct in this message. We subject ourselves to living lives focused on our school or work that we lose the real meaning of life. We perhaps lose what makes us happy. For me, I took a year off from school. This was my way to get away from the normal life of school. I, in a way, "escaped" for a year. I did what I wanted to do. It was a great experience for me. I was opened to a whole new world. Now, back in school, I atleast have the ability to separate my life. I can focus on school but also I know how to escape when I need too. Fight club shows this in a way. Be able to separate your life. Find meaning in what it is you do. Follow your passions and your work life will make more sense. We will suffer unless we find meaning in what it is we do.
